Head and Neck

What is a neck mass?  A neck mass is a lump that occurs anywhere in the neck.  It can be benign or malignant.

In children a neck mass is usually benign and is likely due to:

  1. An enlarged lymph node that is caused by an infection.
  2. A congenital problem such as a cyst

In adults a neck mass can be benign or malignant.  Risks factors for malignant masses include:

  1. Smoking
  2. Use of chewing tobacco/snuff
  3. Exposure to second hand cigarette smoke

Treatment includes

  1. Examination
  2. Biopsy – a sample of tissue is removed for diagnosis
