What is a neck mass? A neck mass is a lump that occurs anywhere in the neck. It can be benign or malignant.
In children a neck mass is usually benign and is likely due to:
- An enlarged lymph node that is caused by an infection.
- A congenital problem such as a cyst
In adults a neck mass can be benign or malignant. Risks factors for malignant masses include:
- Use of chewing tobacco/snuff
- Exposure to second hand cigarette smoke
- Biopsy – a sample of tissue is removed for diagnosis
